Traditional Christian Hymns

Immortal, Invisible,God Only Wise

The Author

Written1867

Walter Chalmers Smith (1824–1908) was a distinguished Scottish minister, poet, and hymn writer of the Free Church of Scotland. Born in Aberdeen, he studied theology and served several congregations during a ministry marked by faithful preaching and literary ability. He later became Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland in 1893. Although not an Anglican, his hymns have been warmly embraced by Christians of many traditions because of their rich biblical content and reverent language.

The Tune

St. Denio

ST. DENIO – a traditional Welsh melody, adapted for congregational singing by John Roberts (1822–1877), a Welsh musician and compiler of hymn tunes. The tune first appeared in Welsh hymn collections and was later paired with Smith’s text. Its broad, stately character complements the hymn’s majestic portrayal of Almighty God.

Background

Walter Chalmers Smith wrote this hymn for publication in his collection Hymns of Christ and the Christian Life (1867). His purpose was to express the greatness, holiness, eternity and incomprehensible majesty of God using language drawn directly from Holy Scripture. Unlike many hymns that speak of the Christian’s personal experience, this hymn is entirely centred on the character and glory of God, making it especially suitable for worship.

Scriptural Foundation

The hymn is chiefly based on:

1 Timothy 1:17 (Authorised Version, 1611)

Other passages reflected in the hymn include:

  • Psalm 90:2 – God’s eternal nature.
  • Psalm 104:2 – “Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment.”
  • 1 Timothy 6:15–16 – God dwelling “in the light which no man can approach unto.”
  • James 1:17 – “the Father of lights.”

Significance of the Hymn

Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise is one of the finest hymns ever written on the majesty and transcendence of God. Its language is dignified, scriptural, and deeply theological, reminding Christians that God is eternal, unseen, all-wise, and worthy of everlasting praise. For more than a century, it has held an honoured place in Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist, and many other hymnals throughout the English-speaking world, continuing to lead congregations in reverent worship of the One who alone is “the King eternal, immortal, invisible.”
